Pour les beaux jours

After two magnificent exhibitions in 2012 and 2018 (the latter dedicated to Frida Khalo, one of his most admired characters), Pedro García Villegas, presents, under the title “Pour les beaux jours”, his third solo exhibition at the Jordi Barnadas Gallery in Barcelona. The title of the exhibition is a nod to his childhood, which was full of beautiful and sunny days, the artist pays tribute to them by transforming and reinterpreting people around him from old photos, some of himself, as well as iconic characters from the Cinema, Music or the Arts. To a greater or lesser extent, Garcia Villegas has always used paper in his works, but for many years now, collage has become his usual technique, relegating painting to a very secondary place. He mainly uses clippings from Paris Match magazines from the 50s and 60s. The yellowish tonality that these magazines have acquired over the years, in the artist’s hands, become the skin of his protagonists, and, aided by suggestive words or phrases that he adds to the compositions, he manages to give a retro and poetic touch to his pieces. Pedro García Villegas demonstrates great skill in masterfully capturing the features and expressions of those portrayed through collage.
