Piece by Piece

(by Natàlia Farré, art critic)

The art of Pedro García Villegas attends to the ‘collage’ technique and the portrait genre. The Barnadas gallery shows its latest pieces, a tribute to Frida Kahlo

Collage, characters and Pedro García Villegas are an inseparable trio. Not in vain the Albacete artist has always worked with paper cut outs. First from any kind, then only with Paris Match sheets of the 50 and 60, specifically. The reason of his preference for the French magazine has a casual provenance («somehow it came to my hands», he says) and an aesthetic reason: «I was attracted by its colors, its shades, its graphics, and by the poetical of the French words». And «the patina given by the years», or what is the same: the yellowish white of the pages that is ideal to represent the skin.

The skin of his protagonists, since Garcia Villegas makes famous portraits with collages: David Bowie, Woody Allen, Katherine Hepburn … and now Frida Kahlo. Fourteen works dedicated to the Mexican artist in the last two years. Why her? «She has always fascinated me, as a person and as an artist, for its exceptional way of overcoming adversities and continuing to fight». Not only that: «She was a very beautiful woman. She was full of light! ». A light that shines in the Barnadas gallery. –
